Description
[Image descriptions: The first meme features disabled athlete Oscar Pistorius and a little girl with a yellow dress and prosthetic "blade" legs (similar to his) standing on a running track. Oscar is in a running position and is looking down and smiling at the little girl. Over the image, there is text that reads, ""the only disability in life is a bad attitude"; the second meme features a little boy with prosthetic 'blade' legs, running on a track. Over the image, there is text that reads, "your excuse is invalid".]

American figure skater and cancer survivor Scott Hamilton was quoted as saying "the only disability in life is a bad attitude". This phrase has since appeared in many internet memes, such as the ones above.

This type of representation has been dubbed as "inspiration porn", a phrase that was first coined by the late disability activist, Stella Young in 2012. It refers to media that positions disabled people as inspirational because they are able to perform everyday things 'despite' their disability. This serves to objectify and 'other' disabled people. It is typically created for the consumption of non-disabled people, as a way to motivate them.
