Over the past few years, wearables have grown in popularity, and the world has seen the use cases evolve from simple wristwatches to present-day wearables that connect with smartphones. Business Insider even claims that the use of “fitness tracker and health-based wearables in the US will grow at an annualized rate of 10% to surpass 120 million by 2023” (Phaneuf). As we acknowledge the importance of technological advancement, so should we recognize its future as a whole for the medical industry on a consumer level.

This collection serves to highlight the proliferation of wearable devices for health purposes, specifically patient monitoring. As healthcare systems struggle to address high costs and administrative burdens, technological developments in digital health seems to be a viable option to make healthcare more accessible. Health equity is also a key issue because this technology may extend the reach of professional care for patients.

Healthcare is now being outsourced using digital health technologies for patient monitoring in hospitals as well as remotely from their homes. Digital Health Platforms are evolving for data sharing with healthcare professionals. Remote monitoring for patients in rural locations patients may help increase their access to healthcare for the first time. The artifacts in this collection aim to illustrate the transformative nature of digital technology across the globe with a common interest in improved healthcare.
