Gender Shades - Joy Buolamwini at MIT Media Lab
Publication/Creation Date
February 9 2018Description
The Gender Shades Project, created at MIT Media Lab by PhD student Joy Buolamwini, pilots an intersectional approach to inclusive product testing for AI. This research found that there is bias in facial recognition software with regards to gender and race, due to a lack of diversity in datasets.
Buolamwini states that, "we risk losing the gains made with the civil rights movement and women's movement under the false assumption of machine neutrality. Automated systems are not inherently neutral. They reflect the priorities, preferences, and prejudices—the coded gaze—of those who have the power to mold artificial intelligence."Source
