The scope of human augmentation technologies needs to be defined through the complex contexts within which they emerge. The core of this collection is our identification of a changing set of value systems that constitute augmentation technologies as social phenomena, namely, beliefs surrounding enhancement, automation, and efficiency. We specifically articulate and examine cognitive, sensory, emotional, and physical enhancements as a range of subcategories for identifying the underlying values of and contextualizing the future of augmentation technologies.
