As Apple Inc. and Fitbit Inc. plan launches of new smartwatches, sales of wearable electronic devices are expected to continue growing strongly for at least the next four years.

Makers of smartwatches and similar gear are expected to ship about 121.7 million devices this year, a 16.6% increase from 104.4 million in 2016, tech-trends tracker International Data Corp. said in a report released Thursday. That pace of growth is expected to stay in place until 2021, when IDC forecasts the shipment of 229.5 million devices, for an annual growth rate of 17.2%.
